Electrical Blog: Understanding the Varieties of Extractor Fans for Your Space

Extractor fans are essential components for maintaining a healthy environment within a home or commercial space. However, not all extractor fans are created equal, and understanding the different styles is crucial in selecting the right one for your specific needs. Here's an exploration of the three common types of extractor fans:


1. Axial Extractor Fans: Axial extractor fans operate by moving air upward, creating a pressure difference that propels the airflow through the fan. These fans are compact and notably silent, making them ideal for smaller rooms like bathrooms and toilets. They can be installed directly in walls, providing direct access to the outside. However, due to their design, axial fans are better suited for shorter distances, requiring placement close to the external outlet.


2. Centrifugal Extractor Fans: Centrifugal extractor fans excel in moving high volumes of air over longer distances. Functioning on the principle of centrifugal force, these fans expel air outward by spinning it through a fan wheel mounted on a rod. While highly effective at moisture extraction, centrifugal fans tend to produce more noise compared to axial fans. Their higher extraction rate makes them suitable for larger spaces such as kitchens, sizable bathrooms, or utility rooms.


3. Inline Extractor Fans: Inline extractor fans are discreetly placed in ceilings above the designated room and operate quietly. These fans are particularly useful for bathrooms that require extended ducting or spaces lacking an external wall. They efficiently eliminate humidity and moisture by drawing air from the targeted area and expelling it through a vent. This vent can either be positioned behind the fan or above the ceiling. Similar to a kitchen exhaust hood, inline fans focus on moisture removal rather than smoke extraction.


Selecting the appropriate extractor fan depends on various factors, including the size of the space, required extraction rate, noise tolerance, and ducting considerations. Understanding the distinct characteristics of axial, centrifugal, and inline extractor fans will aid in making an informed decision tailored to your specific environment and needs.
